EHP head tally
Eastern Highlands had taken a commanding lead in the
medals tally at the third PNG Games in Lae after day two.
As of yesterday, Team Eastern Highlands had won a total of 22 medals – nine
gold, eight silver and five bronze.
They are closely followed by Team National Capital District with ten medals
– nine gold and one silver.
Host Morobe is running third with nine medals – four gold, two silver and
three bronze.
Others to win medals are Team Western (one silver) and Team East New Britain
(one bronze) while Bougainville, Central, East Sepik, Enga, Gulf, Madang,
Manus
New Ireland, Oro, Sandaun, Simbu, Southern Highlands, West New Britain, and
Western Highlands have yet to win medals.
Eastern Highlands and NCD picked up their medals in the their early events
of weightlifting and power-lifting which they dominated on Saturday.
Goroka schoolgirl Yaiyo Malaibi set a new games record in the 48kg divisions
of the women’s weightlifting at the weekend.
Team National Capital District dominated women’s winning four gold medals in
the seven divisions contested and Eastern Highlands collected the other
three gold medals.
Malaibi, a daughter of former PNG Olympian Tino Maliabi, competing in the
48kg division also won the first gold medal for Team Eastern Highlands.
The youngster snatched 28kg and clean and jerked 33kg for a total of 61kg, a
games record in the division being contested for the first time.
Her teammate Hega Anepa collected silver medal ahead of Vivian Seidu of
Morobe.
Gloria Kimbu of NCD won gold in the 53kg division with her lift of 128kg.
She snatched 53kg and cleaned and jerked 70kg for gold.
Selo Mimi of EHP collected silver and her team mate Lyoin Inase picked up
the bronze.
Toksy Amepa and another Malaibi, Spola were the only contestant in the 58kg.
Amepa collected gold and Mailaibi settled for silver.
It was the same in 63kg when Lika Inase won gold and team mate Naomi Willie
collected silver.
Edlyne Miso of NCD picked up the gold in the 69kg division ahead of Morobe’s
Helen Ravu.
NCD’s Philomena Naime snatched gold in 75kg division ahead of EHP’s Amanda
Landu.
Matilda Iso had no opponent in the 75kg-plus division and walked away with
the gold.
