School showcases visual arts

By AUGUSTINE KINNA
THE second biggest secondary school in Bougainville Bishop Wade Secondary witnessed its first ever visual arts exhibition at the Kuri Village Resort in Buka last week.
The Grade 11 visual arts student from Bishop Wade Secondary School (BWSS) had the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills and raw talents for the first time to the general public.
The BWSS visual arts exhibition was made possible through funding from major sponsor Buka Metal Fabricators, a local company that supports schools, sports, church and many others activities in Bougainville.
According to BWSS visual arts teacher Benjamin Domaru the exhibition was basically to expose students’ talents and at the same building up their confidence.
The arts exhibition showcased various arts ranging from canvas painting, sand painting, design writing, pencil drawing to sculpt art.
He said while working with the arts students, he had seen a lot of commitment and interest through the paintings and drawings his students produce.
He added that the purpose of the exhibition was to help his students gain more confidence in their art work and at the same time to promote young artists in Bougainville.
Mr Domaru said he would be working closely with his students to stage a much bigger and better arts exhibition next year.
BWSS visual arts student representative Michael Vali said the art of painting and drawing was one way of expressing ones self and passing on message to the people.
He said he took up the course of visual arts because Bougainville did not have many artists.
“I’m interested in arts because I want to put Bougainville on the art world,” Mr Vali said.
He said Bougainville artists had a lot of potential and he described that their painting could meet the requirements of the international market.
