Mediators learn to administer customary land issues, disputes

LAND disputes will now be settled efficiently and effectively in the Markham district following the completion of the first customary in-house land mediation workshop.
The workshop was carried out by provincial programme adviser Lawrence Billy and his officers and had participation from land mediators and field extension officers.
It disseminated appropriate information to administer all customary land administration including customary land registration and land disputes.
The workshop was conducted by the Umi-Atzera local government council chamber at Umi.
Sixteen officials were awarded certificates of attainment.
Markham MP Konie Iguan, in closing the workshop, called on land mediators and field extension officers in the Markham district to ensure land and extension matters follow proper procedures.
Otherwise, landowners would lose trust in land mediators, he said.
Mr Iguan said mediators should not be involved in the collection of fees.
“Impartiality, honesty and transparency are key elements in the mediation process to restore people’s trust and confidence,” he said.
He also planned to improve and maintain the district’s high level of efficiency by purchasing new uniforms for the mediators and Village Court officials.
