Injia to decide on poll petition venue

The venue for the election petition for Pila Ninigi against Imbonggu MP Francis Awesa will be decided tomorrow by Deputy Chief Justice Salamo Injia.
The venue would be either Mendi or Mt Hagen and alternatively Port Moresby.
Justice Injia will also decide whether ballot boxes and papers used for the electorate in the elections will be brought to Mt. Hagen from Mendi.
An order is in place to bring the 85 boxes and used ballots, which had stored in a container at Mendi police station, to Mt Hagen by the Electoral commission (EC).
However , the EC yesterday informed the court that this had not been done as locals in Mendi had stopped them from moving the boxes and papers.
Mr Ninigi had obtained this order against the EC on Oct 6 from Justice Mark Sevua at the National Court in Waigani.
Mr Awesa’s counsel from Steeles Lawyers yesterday said since the boxes and papers were still in Mendi, they were already safe and did not need to be moved.
Meanwhile, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop’s fate will be made known this Friday.
After a two -day trial last month into an election petition by Wari Vele who lost to Mr Parkop, the court reserved a decision for the end of this week.
Mr Vele alleged that Mr Parkop was still an active member of the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) and did not resign while contesting for the seat in the elections.
