Three CS officers charged

THREE Correctional Service officers have been charged in connection with former Madang governor James Yali’s unauthorised visit to a clinic in Madang town last September.
This follows an investigation by officers sent from Port Moresby.
It is believed that the CS board will decide on the penalty for the officers for “unlawfully carrying a detainee to an unauthorised place”.
The National learnt the likely penalty would be dismissal.
The head of the Madang family clinic, Dr John McAkerell, said Yali did not make an appointment for the visit last Sept 12.
He said that the convicted rapist was brought there by some CS officers and some of his associates.
The incident occurred despite a directive from CS Commissioner Richard Sikani that under no circumstances should Yali be allowed to leave Beon jail.
He had said that if Yali fell sick, the prison authorities should inform his doctors.
In May, Yali was also taken to the Modilon hospital after he claimed to be sick but he ended up going to the Electoral Commission’s office to nominate for the general election.
