Violence against women must stop
WE need tougher penalties for the perpetrators of violence
against women and children to stop this evil and inhuman behaviour by
men.
A woman is not that different from a man. Women have a lot to offer to
our society and country than men.
Why do we have to treat women as second class human beings?
I believe it is about time we consider tougher laws to combat this
violence.
I would suggest the following:
1. Tougher penalties for adultery. Adultery is a serious crime that
needs to be stopped by imposing tougher penalties. Adultery is another
underlying reason for violence against women.
2. Tougher penalties for prostitution. Prostitution has never been part
of our society before the arrival of White Man. Papua New Guineans own
their own land and there is no valid reason for prostitution to be
allowed in the country. This is an immoral behaviour which leads to the
spread of HIV/AIDS and other STDs in the country. As such, it should be
condemned in the strongest manner and tougher laws must be imposed on
those who are caught in the act of such immoral activity. This is also a
cause of violence against women.
3. Ban nightclubs and brothels. Nightclubs and brothels in the country
must be banned as they are the breeding grounds of HIV/AIDS and other
STDs in the country. They also create a lot of social problems such as
rape and family violence.
4. Tougher penalties for drug growers and homebrewers. Apart from AIDS,
the consumption of drugs and homebrew is slowly destroying the young
population of PNG. This is one of the major causes of social problems
such as rape, violence against women and law and order problems. Tougher
penalties must be imposed on those who grow marijuana or brew homemade
liquor.
5. Tougher penalties for producing and possession of pornographic
materials. Strict laws and tougher penalties must be imposed on those
who produce and possess pornographic materials. This is the major cause
of rape in the country.
