Public backs PMV fare rise

By ELIZABETH VUVU
THE new public motor vehicle fares went into effect last Friday in East New Britain and all stakeholders and public have shown their support.
According to the Independent Consumer Competition Commission New Guinea Islands regional manager Michael Paraka, the new fares have been approved following a review of the current PMV fares which took more than two years to complete.
ICCC first made the review with the distribution of a public information paper on the matter which resulted in a draft submission for increase that was widely circulated for public comments.
The review, Mr Paraka said, was carried out because the ICCC felt there was no control over the PMV and taxi industry.
ENB is one of five centres in the country where the new PMV fares came into effect last Friday.
Passengers will now have to pay 70 toea, an increase of 10 toea.
Students from Grade 11 up to vocational schools, colleges and university will pay 50 toea and students from elementary to Grade 10 pay 30 toea.
