Laughing all the way to boxing finals

By HAIVETA KIVIA
ACTION, real action was at the boxing arena at the 3rd PNG Games as provinces sparred their way into quarter finals.
The fighters brought the Indoor Complex at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium rounds of applause with their ring skills and antics.
One such fight was in the 75kg class - between Paul Kome of Western Highlands province in the red corner and Bari Evenon of Autonomous Bougainville Region. It brought the house down in stitches and titters.
Evenon was the aggressor and charged at Kome who ducked and ran all over the ring, and the Bougainvillean chased him around like hound dog loose on his leash.
Even the judges and official found humour in the whole bout including tournament director Dick Larry who was bundled over with laughter
The crowd really enjoyed the actions however, they all ended prematurely when a Western Highlands boxer allegedly did not weigh in earlier in the 81kg class and stepped in for another boxer but was disqualified.
The fight was awarded to his Eastern Highlands opponent Robin Gahave.
This result was disputed and the crowd became rowdy.
The lone 48kg quarter final was abandoned and will be fought today.
Tournament director Dick Larry said all divisions from 48kg up to the 81kg class are now into the quarter final bouts.
Larry said Team Morobe, Central, Bougainville, and National Capital District were dominating the rings.
Boxing will continue today at the Indoor Complex of Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on day five.
