Work on fish market to start in ’08

By GABRIEL FITO
WORK on the K26.8 million Wewak fish market and jetty project in East Sepik is expected to start next December.
A Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) team, which will design the project, returned to Japan recently after studying the site.
Project coordinator Joachim Nianguma said another team would visit the site next March to verify the design.
However, a team report would be made and presented next October where a tender team would arrive to select the contractors.
Work is expected to start as soon as everything has been verified.
Mr Nianguma said the project, which was funded by the Japanese government, should be completed by early 2010.
The project consists of three components – the Wewak town market redevelopment, the construction of the jetty at the old wharf area and an ice plant to supply ice for fishermen.
Mr Nianguma said the fish market would serve both fisherman and farmers.
He said the main town market was in very bad shape and that the Japanese government was helping the National Fisheries Authority (NFA), the National Government and the East Sepik provincial government improve it.
