GG condemns plane hijack

GOVERNOR-General Sir Paulias Matane has condemned the attempted hijacking and robbery of the K4.7 million on board a light aircraft in Port Moresby on Monday.
A distraught Sir Paulias said that crime of such magnitude was unheard of especially in the PNG society.
“I am very disappointed. I was absolutely shocked when I heard about the hijacking of the plane carrying K5million (actual amount K4.7million).
“I always say that this kind of criminal action is not a tradition of the PNG society,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The comments by Sir Paulias stemed from the hijacking of an aircraft on Monday.
The King Air C90 aircraft operated by Tropicair Limited was to do a charter flight for Bank South Pacific in transporting the money to Kiunga and Tabubil respectively.
But it was forced to re-route to Fisherman Island and landed on Daugo airstrip.
Four suspects have been charged, three are still on the run while the gunman who had originally held up the pilots was shot dead during an exchange with police.
“Our way of life is to help each other. Respect and be kind to each other,” Sir Paulias said.
He was also concerned that PNG was a Christian country and yet its people were not living up to the Christian principles as stipulated in the National Constitution.
“I want to call on all people who commit crime to stop doing these illegal activities.
“Use your energy and power to do things for yourselves so you can make a good living for yourselves,” Sir Paulias said.
He also called on unemployed people in towns and cities to go back home to their villages and work the land.
