Strong wind warning but no cyclone: NWS

By ALISON ANIS
THE National Weather Service in Port Moresby has issued strong wind warnings for the Southern region including Port Moresby and has dismissed fears that Cyclone Guba could hit Port Moresby and Central province after diverting its course south east as predicted previously.
Acting director Samuel Maiha reported a tropical low (Depression) forming over Port Moresby yesterday but said there was no threat of a cyclone.
He said the strong wind warnings were issued for Milne Bay, Gulf, Daru and Central provinces including Port Moresby with tropical low reported south of Port Moresby.
“The winds experienced are travelling between 25 to 35 knots (50km an hour) and that cannot be classified as cyclone because a tropical cyclone travels at speeds of up to 100km an hour (about 90 knots),” Mr Maiha said.
He said there would be strong winds but this would not be destructive.
Strong winds, heavy cloud and rain over the Owen Stanley ranges have prevented some mercy flights in Popondetta yesterday.
