Going for triple gold
WNB maintained their unbeatable record to book their grand final berths in
women, men and open mix divisions of touch football today.
They are the current defending champions of the gold (men), silver (mix) and
bronze in the women divisions from 2005 PNG Games.
Coach Benny Fieldis praised his players for the top performance, adding they
are aiming for the gold.
The women moved one step forward from bronze to the silver/gold play-off
while in open mix they are in the contest for gold.
According to tournament director Micah Vele, WNB will lock horn with East
New Britain in the men’s division semi-finals while Morobe take Bougainville
in the other game before the winners meet in the grand final in the
afternoon. The losers will play for bronze.
In the open women, WNB will meet Bougainville in the gold play-off while in
open mix East New Britain take WNB.
Vele said all the grand finals will be completed by this afternoon.
Manus gets a gold
MANUS claimed its first medal after defeating NCD 17-12 for the gold medal
play-off at the triples grand final yesterday. The Manus men who represented
their province for the first time proved too strong for the capital men to
beat them for gold medal.
Morobe took out the silver medal.
Western Highland beat all odds to claim its maiden gold medal title after
defeating Manus by a whisker 14-13 in the women’s triple grand final
yesterday.
Host Morobe finished third and took out the bronze medal.
Western Highlands also won the women’s pairs gold after rolling Manus 24-19
out into second place leaving Morobe in third. Morobe won the men’s pairs
title by defeating NCD for the gold medal play-off and NCD men took out
silver and Manus finished third and settled for the bronze medal.
Tournament director Albert Barakeina said the triples and pair’s competition
finished off yesterday and the singles and fours started their competition
yesterday. All medals presentation will be held tomorrow.
Morobe win softball
PNG representative player Tara Tomananga put on an impressive performance to
helped Morobe to beat East New Britain 15-9 to claim the first gold medal in
the women softball grand final at Eriku Oval in Lae yesterday.
Tomananga was in devastating form and linked up well with her out fielders
Julia Kehatsin, Monica Steven and Manai sisters Joyce, Nellie and Raphaella
linked up well to stop the Tolai women in their tracks to run away with the
win.
East New Britain girls led by second base Waira Lotu, Mary Wangiga, Rachael
Duba and Dulcie August fought back with good batting and fielding to reduce
the home runs at the sixth innings but the failed to cut done in their
errors to allow the Morobe girls to score at will at the bottom of the
seventh inning to settle for gold medal.
ENB men too good
EAST New Britain Lut Karita led the softball men from East New Britain to a
convincing 7-1 victory over Morobe in the softball grand final at the Eriku
diamonds yesterday. Karita was in devastating form and led the East New
Britain to a comfortable lead after taking over from Morobe 1-0 at the top
of the fifth inning.
Martin Tagul, Mesak Elias, Jerry Michael, Joel Vitolon, David Wogan, Luke
Tute, Kenely Kirita and David Wogan were in brilliant in both fielding and
batting and had the home side worried all afternoon with their top
performance. Morobe’s Henry Keleu, Nigel Andy, James and Peter Simon, David
Nambon, Agiel Aiton, Mark Ilam and Joshua Purgo kept applying pressure into
East New Britain but lacked the finishing power and were outrun in both the
fielding and batting to go down 7-1.
Eastern Highland settled for the bronze medal.
Wanigela final
SHARKS Park will come alive this weekend as the Neigbours Section come down
as favourites in Koki Wanigela village touch grand final.
Eight teams have geared up for the grand final and is said to be a
physically showdown.
Section’s club chairman, Keith Geno said the whole purpose of the
competition was for young people to socialise and interact.
The teams to assemble for the finals are Wanbel Eels to take on Bay Melona
Broncos, Galoba Eels meet Namel Roosters and Raider will try their best to
tame the Tigers.
The big match will be between minor premiers Moale Knights and the underdogs
Eyes Only Cowboys.
This should be a tough battle with both teams having the speed and skills.
However, there are growing fears that the 2007 try scoring machine for
Cowboys Gesu
With the rain staying away, Koki is looking forward for the finals this
Sunday.
Morata clash set
THE Morata state-of-origin is on this weekend when the mighty Blues look set
to demolish the Maroons in the Morata league competition.
The clash was postponed last weekend because of rain but is definitely on
this weekend – rain or no rain, officials said yesterday.
The Blues from Morata 2 and Maroons from Morata 1 have been challenging each
other for the past two years with the Blues winning both times and are
confident of their third this weekend.
Blues are favourites with the inclusion of Lae Bombers star centre Matthew
Puke.
Maroons are counting on their young side to win the trophy for the first
time.
