Morobe and NCD in the lead in hockey
By BONNIE ABOLA
LAE hockey fans braved the heat again to watch the continuation of round
two of the Men’s Hockey yesterday.
The rounds second last game between host team Morobe and Manus was called
off 15 minutes before full time following a protest by Manus when one of
their players Peter John was whacked across the sheen by Morobe’s Joe Tappe.
He was given a yellow card and the game was eventually stopped resulting in
the game being taken by Morobe 2 points to 1.
The referees have been told by the game officials to write a report
concerning the obstruction.
Both teams however showed true sportsmanship by avoiding confrontations and
shook hands after the game.
In other games yesterday, Team Morobe proved they were heat resistant when
they managed to defrost Team Eastern Highlands in an 8-0 win.
Also Team NCD’s Jackson Kisokau contributed to his teams five point win over
NCD whose only goal was scored through a penalty shot by Posangat Pondrilei.
Whilst the bird fight between Manus and Madang ended in a 2-0 win for Manus.
Eastern Highlands were again melted down by team NCD when team captain
Michael Potuan scored. Peter “Bisket” Young followed suit and a minute later
Raymond Popal whacked in another.
And as if that wasn’t enough to take them to victory Sapau Tapo, Shailen
Birney and Sonny Wilson also scored goals minutes of each other taking out
game 6-0.
In the last match between Team Madang and Central, both teams were in a
dog-fight to draw 2-all, closing the games for the day.
In round 3 games today, Morobe will take on NCD, Eastern Highlands will try
to beat neighbours Madang and Central will try to stop Manu.
In the women’s games, Team Central will battle against Manus, and favourites,
host team Morobe will go up against Eastern Highlands.
The medal playoffs will be on Friday.
