Poor response to crisis

SOME public servants yesterday confronted Government representatives to the on-going relief operations in flood-devastated Oro province to express dismay over the chaotic response to the crisis.
They vented their anger on Inter-governmental Minister Joseph Pomat, PNG Defence Force commander Commodore Peter Ilau and State of Emergency controller Col Vagi Oala.
The public servants had threatened to withdraw services over their frustrations arising from the lack of coordination among Oro politicians and the members of the provincial disaster committee.
However, Mr Pomat had assuaged the complaining government workers, asking them to identify the personalities causing problems in relief operations.
“This was the kind of behaviour that had resulted in the chaotic situation since the disaster took place.
“And I am now warning all public servants not to play politics because people are dying right now.”
Mr Pomat had also warned against attempts to profit from the calamity.
“I am warning everybody against using the disaster as an opportunity to make quick money.
“We have learnt a lot during the Aitape tsunami, Rabaul and Manam volcano eruptions that big money had been misused to the detriment of the calamity victims.”
Mr Pomat, however, promised those things would never happen in Oro.
Meanwhile, Mr Ilau told the people in Popondetta about the help arriving from Australia and also from the French government.
Provincial disaster coordinator Thompson Manuda said Red Cross had sent 3,600 waterproof canvasses.
