Parkop to know fate today

NATIONAL Court judge Gibbs Salika is expected to rule today whether National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop was eligible to contest this year’s election.
Former governor Wari Vele claimed that when Mr Parkop stood for election, he was still a serving member of the PNG Defence Force which, under Section 67, Defence Act, made him ineligible to be a member of Parliament.
Mr Vele, who also contested the seat, said Mr Parkop’s election should therefore be declared null and void.
Apart from Mr Parkop, he also named the Electoral Commission and commissioner Andrew Trawen as respondents.
