Thugs flee with
K150,000 from two ANZ ATMs
ROBBERS threatened to shoot some staff of the ANZ Bank
if they refused to surrender the combination numbers that would unlock
two automatic teller machines (ATMs) at the RH Hypermarket building in
Port Moresby.
After obtaining the code, three robbers went to the ATM outlet along
with one of the ANZ employees while their accomplices watched over the
others.
The robbers took about K150,000 from the two machines and released all
the five employees.
The incident occurred last Friday morning, when six ANZ employees from
the bank’s Waigani branch went to the RH Hypermart building in Gordon to
top up the machines with cash.
As they were returning to their vehicle, five men in police uniform
accosted them and forced them into a van with tinted glass.
The robbers also took the ANZ vehicle and drove to a location behind the
Defence Force Air Transport Wing, where they threatened the workers.
Police have interviewed the workers to gather information, which they
hope will lead them to the criminals.
Meanwhile, the ANZ management said in a statement that it had increased
security at all its branches and ATM outlets throughout the country.
