Digicel acquires TonFon of Tonga

DIGICEL Pacific Ltd has expanded its footprint in the Pacific region with the acquisition of TonFon, subject to regulatory and other requirements of the Tonga government.
This included the acquisition of the internet service provider (ISP) and cable businesses owned by TonFon.
With a population of 102,000 people and market coverage of only 35%, Digicel is committed to delivering real value, unprecedented service and coverage and innovation to mobile customers in Tonga.

Such efforts can only bring significant benefits to consumers, businesses and tourists, while at the same time increasing the competitiveness of Tonga and its attractiveness as a regional business centre.
Digicel Pacific chief executive officer Vanessa Slowey said: “As part of our regional expansion in the Pacific, we are delighted to announce our expansion into Tonga today (yesterday).
“We believe we have a great opportunity to build on the success of TonFon and introduce new products and services into the market.”
Digicel launched its first Pacific operation in Samoa in November 2006, followed by the launch of Digicel Papua New Guinea last July.
“This is an exciting new development in the growth of Digicel in the Pacific region.
“Our aim is to place the entire Pan-Pacific region at the cutting edge of wireless technology by delivering superior technology and being passionate about providing the best mobile phone service to customers,” Ms Slowey said.
