Rural areas in WHP to receive email and phone services

By PIUS MON
THE Western Highlands provincial government has purchased equipment to take telecommunication services into the rural areas.

Under a comprehensive plan to introduce the email and telephone services to the rural areas, the provincial government bought 10 satellite disks that would be installed in selected areas in the province to boost the new telecommunication services.
Governor Tom Olga announced in Lae last week that his government spent K800,000 to buy the disks and they were to be put up soon.
Mr Olga said the objective of the programme was to enable people in rural areas to have excess to email and telephone services.
Mr Olga said improved communication services would impact positively on the economic growth.
He said a website is currently being constructed that will profile the province as well as the seven districts and the people.
Governor Olga said information about the province or a particular district will be accessed anywhere in the world rather then people travelling long distances to the province.
He added that those were some of the benefits that the rural population missed out over the years, adding that the rural areas play a major role in the economy of the province.
