IT’S the final countdown four more days and PNG will host the biggest kickboxing event ever - PNG vs The Rest of the World.
The international showdown, scheduled for Sunday, Dec 2, has attracted more than ten countries.
Hollywood star and former kickboxing great Don ‘The Dragon’Wilson will be special guest
at the tournament.
PNG’s 20-man team have a huge task before them and training in the past two months has been hectic, and they are confident of winning.
Papua New Guinea Kickboxing Association (PNGKBA) president Stanley Nandex said his fighters’ attitude and commitment to training were of a high standard and he expected professional kickboxing
on the ring.
“We are facing very professional fighters and my boys must be of top performance Ö fight the best they can. All has been taught during our training sessions and we are ready,” Nandex said.
Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Wilson is excited about coming for the event and also to assess the strength of kickboxing and martial arts in PNG.
“I am planning a short visit but hope to see and experience as much as possible, during my stay.
“I am curious about the state of martial arts and kickboxing in Papua New Guinea as it will be my first trip, and I hope to have many more,” Wilson said via email last week.
Over the course of his career Wilson won 11 world titles in three different weight divisions and was classed as a champion in his own right.
PNGKBA appreciates Wilson’s visit and make sure the event showcase the greatest fighters around the world.
Nandex said the event is a stepping stone for the code in the country and the Oceania region.
“PNG have a lot to learn from world renowned fighters and we have the advantage as hosts for the international event,” Nandex said.
