3 PTB teams begin the task of rebuilding

By SHEILA LASIBORI
THE Works Department has set up teams in its efforts to restore infrastructure in the disaster-stricken Oro province.

The major road links and bridges have topped the list in this infrastructure restoration effort by at least three teams from the department’s plant and transport branch (PTB).
And the first bridge tacking is reportedly ready for shipment from Lae for rebuilding of some of the 28 bridges that got washed away by flood waters.
Defence Force Commander Commodore Peter Ilau last weekend said some of PNGDF’s heavy landing craft such as the HMS Salamaua would assist with the shipment of the tacking.
The PTB office in Popondetta confirmed that the first team working on the town to Girua airport road had constructed some by-pass roads and bridges.
The by-pass roads and bridges had been constructed at Bangoho and Haijo Rivers and through the Girua oil palm blocks using an unused existing road path.
The second team had taken charge of the road improvement and necessary work on the road from Kikiri mission station, where a care centre has been set up, to the town.
This team had so far being pouring gravel at certain sections of the road to prevent the road from further deterioration through erosion.
The third team, which has already completed road works along Kokoda road, is now working in Double Cross, with focus on sections of the road and bridges along it.
