Enga not up to
scratch
By PETER PIA
TEAM Enga fans and supporters who turned out to cheer their team at the
third PNG Games in Lae were disappointed with the overall team performance
which they described as poor.
Supporters called on the sole sponsor – Enga provincial government - to put
the sports office in Wabag in place in order to organise provincial games to
ensure all districts compete to select the best team for 2009 PNG Games.
Lae resident Kala Kaiyel said that if Enga provincial government continued
to pump substantial money into sports, then athletes should perform well and
make the province proud.
“Look how much Enga provincial government always spends on sports in the
province. The government plays its part but why did Team Enga performed
poorly in Lae?
“As an Engan I supported my team with cold drinks but their performances in
some games were disgraceful.
“The organising committee should have sent a strong team to compete in such
a big event,” said Kaiyel.
He claimed there was no proper selection and training for Team Enga and
athletes were randomly picked off the streets.
At the end of the week Engans settled for one silver and two bronze medals.
