Yonki basketball
back on track
AFTER a four-year absence on the basketball scene the Yonki
Amateur Basketball Association (YABA) of Eastern Highlands province are back
on track this weekend with a big ñ it is grand final time.
YABA have been active this season under a good executive who have made sure
Yonki was represented at the National U20 championship and the All Stars
tournament in Ramu recently.
In this weekend’s grand finals, in senior men’s division Elbees of Yonki
lock horns with SIL KD of Ukarumpa, Aiyura Valley.
Both teams will be led by selected junior players for PNG U20 train-in squad
- Christopher Jal for KD and Greg Ravini for the Elbees.
This final will also see Elbees coming in as the underdogs against the
season front runners.
West team, dominated by Western Highlanders, will be hard to crack as they
meet Blazers in the women’s final.
Blazers will want to keep that fire burning but must keep the ball
coordination at close hand.
The junior matches should really wake the small Yonki township as Jokers
should give Eagles a good run in the U15 boys.
Jokers will need their power-pack defence to shut down Sparks.
But Sparks is a team that should turn the table in the final minutes.
Meanwhile, according to association vice-president and competition technical
coordinator Tadec Dan Kwalam has high hopes for a successful finals weekend.
Kwalam said they hope to make next year’s competition even bigger and
better. |
