NARI’s husbandry training

By ATMALEO AGUYANTO
THE National Agricultural Research Institution (NARI) recently provided a two-week training on goat-and-rabbit-raising in Lae recently.
NARI also gave away four goats and seven rabbits to three trainees from Manus province for them to raise back home.
The training focused on basic husbandry practices such as housing, animal-handling, breeding, health and general management.
Much time was given to rabbit-raising as this animal is new to the farmers.
The trio are all brothers and owners of a local farm – Manus Farm – which was started in November 2006 on a half hectare piece of land.
The farm already had goats acquired from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock at Erap in Morobe province.
The farm is also raising free-ranging village chickens.
With the new animals from NARI, the brothers wanted to expand their farm to a commercial scale.
