PNG Ports gives K10,000 to Oro
THE Halivim Wantok Disaster Appeal received a cheque of
K10,000 from the PNG Ports Corporation (PNGCPL) Ltd yesterday.
A separate cheque of K2,485 including two bags of clothes were also
presented on behalf of the staff to the victims of Cyclone Guba in Oro
province.
PNGPCL acting chief executive officer Joshua Taruna said PNG Ports had a
prime responsibility among others to ensure social and economic obligations
of PNG citizens are facilitated through its ports nationwide and Oro Bay
port is a physical sign of that commitment to the province and its people.
Following that commitment, one of the company’s immediate tasks now was to
repair the damage done to the causeway, light mast and the shed caused by
Cyclone Guba in order for normal business to resume.
He said the management had already sent a team of engineers and other
officers on a chartered chopper late last month to assess the damage and
return.
He advised major port users that the Oro Bay Port was intact and that
overseas vessels could still make calls.
Discharged cargo will be free of storage fees until the port resumes normal
port business resumes.
Logistic constraints initially identified on the ground on bridges linking
Popondetta town, the airport and Oro Bay has all been good news.
The main gateway to the province has been reconnected which will pave the
way for mobilisation to site to bring in equipment, materials and personnel
to undertake repair works at the cost of about K560,000.
