Twenty teams vying for Governor’s Cup in
Gulf
A TOTAL of 20 teams are currently taking part in the
Governor’s Cup soccer tournament at Malalaua District in Gulf province.
The tournament, the first of its kind. is by far the biggest ever sporting
tournament hosted by the Gulf administration.
With the backing from Gulf Governor Hailva Kavo and Kerema Open MP Titus
Pitum Bombom, the tournament had attracted teams from all over Kerema
district.
The tournament publicity officer Tony Morehari said yesterday that this is
the first soccer tournament to be hosted in Gulf province.
“Usually, Gulf people do not play soccer but this has changed and people are
trying out all sorts of sports such as soccer, Rules Football and
volleyball.
“Gulf province is renowned for basketball and rugby league,” he said.
Morehari said both the Governor and MP Bombom have also extended the
invitation to the former Governor Chris Haiveta to attend the closing
ceremony.
He said more than K25,000 was made available for the tournament which part
of it would go to the champion and the place-getters.
It is still being decided how much the winner would collect along with the
Governors Cup. |
