K1b for Morobe five-year plan
The Morobe provincial government expects to raise over K1
billion over the next five years to fund its services and pay public
servants.
The provincial finance office yesterday revealed that K1,050,391,294 would
be made from internal sources as well as from National Government grants, an
increase by 50% from the money spent during the last five years.
Provincial finance manager Sheila Harou said with the expected increase in
funding, it was important that a good plan was put in place to use the
money.
The 2008/2012 projection was presented at the consultative meeting on the
five-year development plan for Morobe, which commenced last Tuesday.
“There must be a monitoring and evaluation process in place and working and
annual reviews of this plan.
“Quarterly districts and local level government reviews must be
strengthened,” Ms Harou said.
The projections for the five-year period show that K808,546,634 would come
in as National Government grants while the balance would be from internal
sources.
The provincial government expects to raise K241,544,660 in the five-year
period with much of the money from Goods and Services Tax contributing the
highest with K154,828,200.
Documents also show that Morobe would be picking up its first royalty
payment from the Hidden Valley gold mine in 2009, sum of K9,800.000,
bringing the total to K39,200,000 by 2012.
The province would also earn an additional K13,066,400 in the five-year
period from the Hidden Valley mine as royalties to the local level
governments in the mine impacte areas.
Ms Harou said the five-year projection had gone up by K500,000 from the 2003
to 2007 period.
The consultative meeting attended by all senior programme managers in the
department of Morobe and all MPs from the province, reviews the performance
of the last five-year plan to develop the next five-year plan.
All programme advisors, district managers and council managers were expected
to give a rundown on their achievements and their plans for the next five
years in the three-day meeting.
