NGOs declare war on corruption

By ELIZABETH MIAE
NON-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the civil society have combined forces and declared war on corruption comparing it to HIV/AIDS as eating the flesh of human beings.
Both parties stressed in a statement that if anyone was serious and concerned about the country then he or she must take ownership of the fight regardless of who or what they were.
According to the president of Millennium Good Governance Victor Kongop, who claimed to represent the views of other NGOs, anyone found to be involved in any form of corruption must be publicly humiliated as no person in PNG was above the law.
“We had mandated leaders to address such issues once and for all but instead they also become part and parcel of the game. Therefore, enough is enough and we the NGOs and civil society declare war on corruption in PNG,” he said.
“We see that if corruption still exists, there is no guarantee for PNG’s future. We see that the future generations will become spectators on their own land, which will lead to starvation, HIV/AIDS and other related social problems.”
Mr Kongop challenged other anti-corruption bodies to take action as well rather than just bark at the issue.
