Challenge to be better in sports

GULF provincial government has been challenged to improve its sporting policy so it can be benefit the grass root population.
Malalaua sports council chairman George Lare issued the challenge during the closing of the volleyball tournament held at Malalaua District Headquarters in Gulf province last Friday.
Lare wants the Gulf provincial sports council to set up a body to secure funds and logistic to see Gulf provincial teams qualify or participate in any national or international sporting tournaments.
“So far, sporting teams out of Gulf province has not been faring well against other centres if the current performance of the Team Gulf to the recent PNG Games in Lae was an indication,” he said.
“I now appealed to the current provincial sports council to review policies governing sports and come up with plans to have sports played in all the districts in the province,” Lare said.
He believed that sports has not been properly nutured and developed to become a meaningful tool for development. “If the sport is properly developed, it can really help minimise the law and order situation in the districts and province as a whole”.
Lare said sport was never development due to ineffective administrative machinery at the government level.
He reiterated that sports must have guidelines to ensure the rural population benefit, and also appoint committed management team to run sports in the province to take sports to the next level.
Lare said many Gulf citizen living in other parts of PNG were proudly representing their respective adopted homes.
“I want to see our very own Gulf people do the same for Gulf people,” he said.
