Yama’s petition set for March 3

THE Madang National Court will begin hearing an election petition filed by Peter Yama against Madang Governor Sir Arnold Amet on March 3.
Chief Justice Sir Mari Kapi set aside 10 days for the hearing after a pre-trial conference yesterday at the National Court in Waigani.
He directed the parties involved to resolve all outstanding matters to avoid disrupting the trial.
Mr Yama had also named the Electoral Commission as a defendant.
He is claiming that there were irregularities, including bribery, counting errors and undue influences in the election.
Mr Yama wants the court to declare him as the duly-elected governor or alternatively the election null and void.
More than 60 witnesses may be called to give oral and written evidence during the trial.
Mr Yama is being represented by his lawyer Philip Ame while Sir Arnold is represented by Roger McGuire.
Ray William was acting for the Electoral Commission.
Mr Yama represented himself yesterday as Mr Ame was sick.
