Rookie Sevens get underway in NCD

By PETER PUSAL
THE Port Moresby Rookie Sevens got underway yesterday at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby.
The sevens tournament exclusively for Under 19 boys and girls and women teams has drawn teams from all Port Moresby clubs along with other city teams formed especially for the occasion.
Notable action from day one saw Defence1 outclass a struggling Chiefs2 48-0 in the women’s division. Defence were well served with the “guest appearances” of PNG sprinters Mae Koime and Raphaela Baki.
The other women’s open division was all one-way traffic with Chiefs1 crushing Kekeni 58-0.
Other highlights came from the U19 boys division with Chiefs scoring four unconverted tries to take out Defence 20-0 and Harlequins1 edging out Mangi Rugby 12-10 in a tight encounter.
With players and spectators getting a taste of conditions on day one, today’s games should make for a spectacle as teams will be vying for play-off spots in what has been an evenly contested tournament so far - aside from the women’s open division.
