Kabilo to stand trial

THE Wewak District Court has committed suspended East Sepik provincial police commander Chief Supt Leo Kabilo to stand trial in the National Court on alleged rape charges.
Presiding magistrate Jeremiah Singomat made the ruling yesterday, explaining that the committal proceeding was only a forum to ascertain whether there was enough evidence to commit the accused to stand trial at the National Court.
Mr Singomat explained that it was during the trial where the accused was at liberty to call witnesses to substantiate his case.
He said there was ample evidence which warranted the case to go before the National Court for trial.
Kabilo, 55, from Sapuain village, East Sepik, is a senior police officer who has been serving the force for over 30 years.
He is facing two charges of rape, which he allegedly committed with a women on two separate occasions between November 2006 and March this year.
Kabilo was charged under section 347 of the Criminal Code Act for alleged rape or sexual penetration.
The trial date is yet to be set.
Kabilo’s court bail of K1,000 had also been extended.
