Water agency acquires permit for PoM
sewage project

EDA Ranu has acquired a permit from the Department of Environment and Conservation that will allow it to undertake a major sewerage upgrading project in Port Moresby.
The permit cost the water agency K103,360.
The proposed infrastructure project is placed at K209 million.
A submission will go to National Executive Council (NEC) next year for final approval before a formal request is put to the Japanese government through the Japanese Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC).
Stringent environmental requirements were set by the Japanese government and the PNG Environment Act 2000.
The department ensured the environmental issues and concerns with regard to the project had been thoroughly addressed.
The upgraded sewerage system will see a major facelift in the coastal environment sewerage facilities including the construction and installation of a state-of-the-art secondary treatment plant using the oxidation ditch method at KilaKila Joyce Bay area.
Eda Ranu general manager Billy Imar said: “This marks another milestone for the project to move forward.”
This project was set to bring economic, social and environmental benefits to the capital city, he said.
Here, the sanitary and living conditions of the residents would be improved and many would have the opportunity to access proper sewerage system.
