COLUMN I
BY now, many of our readers
will be heading to all the points of the compass in pursuit of the ideal
getaway. We wish you the happiest and the most hassle-free of holidays. And
of course, one or two Christmas presents just to complete the picture.

LITTLE Miss Three, who lives across the street from us, is a bright and
bouncy young lady with a normally equable temperament. But a month or two
ago, she was presented with a baby sister. She soon got over mild
disappointment – she was hoping for a male of the species – and all seemed
bright and beautiful.
***
BUT the other day, we heard shrieks of feminine outrage drifting across the
road. Whatever could be the matter? Papa duly appeared, Miss Three in his
arms, clearly in a state of advanced pique. It turned out that our young
friend had spied one of the baby’s new outfits and decided it was just what
she wanted. Doesn’t take ’em long to develop a sense of style, now does it?

SPY informed us rather hazily yesterday that he had spent Saturday night at
a great party in his haunt of Madang. Seems it was a get-together of the
coastal town’s distinguished persons (how Spy received an invitation remains
a dark mystery) who were treated to a splendidly catered affair on the lawns
of an absolute water frontage residence.
***
THIS largesse was complemented by a never-diminishing punch bowl, a secret –
and apparently deadly – recipe refined over the years. Add an almost full
moon, garden paths cunningly lit with gutting candles, reflections on the
harbour and a genial host and hostess … Spy certainly seemed to have enjoyed
himself.

MEANWHILE, here in the capital most of the better nightclubs have big
Christmas programmes underway; our old friends at Lamana are holding a
Christmas Family Day tomorrow from 2pm with a magnificent traditional
Christmas buffet for adults and a special outdoor party for the kids, with
fireworks at dusk. Give Anne on 3232333 a buzz to make sure there’s still
room at the inn, as it were.

BEWARE the mistletoe – and we’ll be back on Thursday. Cheers!
