By ZARA KANU
THE Mt Victoria track in the Central province will become a new tourist
destination.
The track runs through the Owen Stanley ranges and borders with the Central
and Oro provinces.
The area is now open for promotion of tourism activities and those willing
to conduct research into the wildlife and rainforest area.
This was formally made known by the landowners and their families when they
fronted at The National office last Tuesday.
Principle landowner and spokesman Kenny Abau said: “I have initiated a local
tour guide project to formally recognise it as a community project.
“This is to bring about tangible development to the region to support the
local community earn some form of income to sustain their living.
“We want to prioritise on projects like tourism and research for a start
which may lead to other business ventures in the future,” Mr Abau said.
He said they had established networks with other international tourism
organisations and the Tourism Promotion Authority was currently assisting
with the promotions and marketing efforts.
The mountain was named after queen Victoria of England during British
colonisation of PNG.
