Works and PNGDF to repair roads and bridges

THE rebuilding of infrastructure in flood-devastated Oro province is now being taken head on by the Works Department and engineers from the Defence Force.
Much road accessibility especially through sections of the road where bridges and culvert once stood have been through wet crossings, Bailey (temporary) bridges and by-pass roads.
According to provincial works manager Lalio Erasi it would cost between K130 and K200 million to restore infrastructure in the province.
In recent weeks, continuous rain has caused the rivers to continue flooding which has further affected efforts to restore temporary and permanent infrastructure.
This was visible last weekend when a bulldozer was hard at work since last Sunday towing vehicles especially four-wheel drive vehicles across the river where Girua bridge once stood.
The bulldozer was engaged to assist in preventing vehicles from being washed down by the fast flowing current at the wet crossing, down stream from the original location of the bridge.
Meanwhile, work is still continuing on the construction of the 30m (long) by 15m (wide) ramp at Kikiri.
The delay has caused passenger vessels and the HMS Buna to berth out at sea where motorised dinghies have been busy transporting goods and people onto the Kikiri beach.
