Warring tribes welcome peace

By SENT TIMBI
Two warring tribes that turned the well known Baiyer River Valley into a war zone for the last three years made peace over the weekend.

The fight between the Kimbin Rumi and the Kumba Maip tribes resulted in 45 lives being lost and properties worth millions of kina destroyed.
It also forced the closure of Kombolopa High School since March 2005.
On Sunday, peace was brokered in front of their local MP and Minister for Internal Security Sani Rambi at Kombolopa.
People from all over the district went to witness the peace ceremony.
The warring tribes handed over bullets to Minister Rambi and church officials as a sign of peace.
The peace process was made possible by the Pastors and elders of the Melpa church in PNG who had been negotiating with the warring tribes for the last few months.
Minister Rambi urged the tribes to uphold the peace pact if they wanted services from the Government to return to their area.
He said barracks for a police mobile unit would be established at Kwinga patrol post.
He also committed K100,000 to improve facilities at the Kombolopa High School, which would resume enrolment in 2009.
