Outdated policies to be reviewed

The 1994 communication and information policy has been classed outdated and instructions have been issued to the Department of Communication and Information for the policy to be reviewed.
This was revealed by the Information minister and Member for Kokopo Patrick Tammur during a gathering at Kokopo, East New Britain, over the weekend.
Mr Tammur said communication and information was the key driver of all activities in such a rapidly changing era and there was a need for the policy to be reviewed and necessary changes made to cater for the present needs of the sector.
He said he had already issued instructions to the department to carry out a review on the 1994 communication and information policy and that the review would be widely circulated in the country.
He urged those in the province, in institutions of higher education, the private sector, non-governmental organisations and the general public to have their input in the revised policy once it is circulated.
He also highlighted the ministry’s commitment in establishing the country’s very own television station.
“The Prime Minister had already made a commitment for a TV station to come into operation by June 2008,” Mr Tammur said.
He said the chief secretary had directed the National Broadcasting Corporation to operate the TV station and other relevant government agencies to come up with project plans that would be formalised for briefing next week prior to cabinet’s considerations early next year.
