Soccer qualifiers on
PAPUA New Guinea will participate in Women World Cup qualifier on a home-and-away series next year. PNGFA president David Chung said the first women qualifier will be on March 8 in Port Moresby and the away game will be on March 12 in Auckland, New Zealand.
Chung said this was decided at the OFC executive meeting in Sydney, Australia, recently where they also met with Football Federation of Australia to seek technical aid. He said PNG women football was the way to go as PNG men will have to improve our coaching and technical area.
Chung said he was confident that with the advent of semi professional competition, the National Soccer League, PNG can now compete with the rest of the island countries.

Bowls pioneer rewarded
LAE Bowls Club secretary Albert Barakeina will be honoured with life membership of the oldest bowling club in Bulolo tomorrow. Barakeina first played bowls in Bulolo when he was a student attending Forestry College in the 1970s.
Barakeina had represented PNG in a number of international competitions around the world and won many medals during his playing career and all his efforts will be recognised by Bulolo Bowls Club to be made life membership of the club. He has thanked the Bulolo Bowls Club for recognising him as one of the pioneer nationals of the early 1970s.

Challenge a success
TWENTY-one teams took part in the Boxing Day mixed triples bowling challenge at the Lae Bowls Club on Wednesday. Lae Bowls secretary Albert Barakeina said many senior bowlers formed teams and took part in the inaugural event.
“We had a successful Boxing Day mixed triples challenge at the Lae Bowls Club, it was interesting to note that many junior bowlers turned up in numbers and took part in the mixed triples challenge,” Barakeina said.
“I want to thank all the junior bowlers for taking part in the Boxing Day mixed triples challenge this year. We will now be finalising a junior bowling competition to be played at the Lae Bowls Club every Saturday starting next year,” he added.
The NCD Novice Taekwondo Challenge Cup, originally scheduled to run for three days from December 23, was extended into Boxing Day Wednesday 26 to cater for all competitors. A total of 251 fighters who took part in this four-day event with the men’s and women’s open divisions completing their finals on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively while the other age groups will have their finals tomorrow.
The winners from the completed men’s open division were in the middleweight division Moses Opa; welterweight Jonathan Paschalis; lightweight Wake Thomas; featherweight Nathan Wape; and bantamweights Jeffrey Hoko.
For the women’s open Tina Joe emerged the gold medal winner and in the under 16 girl’s Jenny Joel was awarded the gold. The fighter of the tournament was middleweight champ Moses Opa.
