Under-21s make first serving of volleyball champs


GIANTS, the National Capital District and Morobe, are favoured to dominate across all divisions in the National Volleyball Championships that start today in Port Moresby.
The national titles will see associations compete in the Under-21 and senior divisions (men’s, women’s) at the Taurama Indoor and Aquatic Centre, with games to be scheduled for the long Independence annniversary weekend.
The U21 competition starts today with the finals on Wednesday and the tournament’s official opening ceremony.
A feast of volleyball will take place at the international standard venue and players are expected to lift as for the majority this will be the first time a major volleyball tournament is being staged there after last year’s Pacific Games.
The three-day U21 tournament ends midweek with the finals preceeded by the championships’ opening ceremony.
Vabukori (U21 men) and NCD (U21 women) are the defending champions.
Popondetta, Gomore, Irupara, Gavuone, Hanuabada and Gulf are expected to field competitive sides as well.
For the Popondetta men, who walked the Kokoda Track to reach Port Moresby, the experience will be a positive one, win, lose or draw, especially since this is the province’s first participation at a national championship after close to a decade in the doldrums.
Darkhorses Tatana, along with Huon Gulf, Butibam and Hula are the other sides to watch in both divisions. Admission into the TIAC: K5 (adults), K3 (students), K2 (children).
