FOR the first time, people in remote parts of Abau district, Central, will be able to participate in sporting activities to celebrate the Independence anniversary this week.
Abau MP and Minister for Public Services Sir Puka Temu said their inclusion would give them a sense of belonging to PNG.
With that in mind, the MP has allocated over K200,000 from his district grants to host one of the biggest sporting activities in the area to mark the occasion.
“I am proud to announce that Abau is preparing to celebrate Independence with the rest of PNG,” he said.
“All three local government areas of Abau from Amazon Bay, Cloudy Bay to Aroma coast, will be involved in sporting activities.”
He said the biggest sporting event would be canoe racing.
“Our people have been seafarers all their lives and it is through that understanding in sports that we try to maintain and promote the art and skills of seamanship.”
