Abavu, cool as you like but up for the challenge

FULLBACK Bland Abavu is not fazed by the thought of being the last line of defence against a super star line-up in the Australian Prime Minister’s 13.
Given the No.1 jersey for the annual PMs 13 fixture is a vote of confidence for the Koiari man, who is relishing the challenge.
“This is a big challenge for me and my teammates and we’re all looking forward to it but we’ll take it as it comes,” the easy going Abavu said.
Abavu is the second in his family to play in the PM’s 13 clash with older brother Josiah having represented the country in 2011.
“I’m following in his (Josiah) footsteps but there is still one more goal to achieve and that is the Kumuls.”
He said he was grateful to Hunters and PM’s 13 coach Michael Marum for giving him the chance.
From his time coming through the ranks at the Dobo Warriors in the Port Moreaby league, Abavu said it had always been about challenging himself against the best.
Tomorrow the 23-year-old will get a rare opportunity to take on the world’s best players in front of his home crowd, and for the lanky former junior basketball rep reaching lofty heights won’t be a problem.
