Aitape needs better roads, mayor says

PEOPLE in Aitape in West Sepik need to see more development in and around the town, says mayor Ian Smith Welisai.
He also said roads in the district were in a terrible state and permanent bridges needed to be built.
“Our roads have deteriorated over the years and nothing seems to be happening,” he said.
He said people travelling along the Sepik Highway from Aitape to Wewak in the East Sepik would come across a lot of wet crossings because there were no bridges.
Welisai said PMV drivers and vehicle owners suffered the most because of the damage to the vehicles.
“A new vehicle after running up and down the highway can get mechanical faults within six months and it’s very challenging for vehicle owners and especially highway PMV drivers who risk their lives and their passengers,” Welisai said.
He said for Aitape to progress, the roads, airstrips and the wharf should be upgraded.
“These are three key connection points that will bring development and much needed government service into the district.”
