THE PNG Board of Architects has been revived after nine years – with the swearing-in of five board members yesterday.
The five were appointed by Works and Implementation Minister Francis Awesa and sworn in by Senior Provincial Magistrate Jimmy Tapay in Port Moresby.
The chairman is Vaghi Gairowagga, the assistant secretary of architecture and building with the Department of Works and Implementation.
The members are PNG Institute of Architects president David Rovau, head of architecture at the University of Technology Professor Cletus Gonduan, managing director of Tusitala Architects Derek Edward Smith and architect Disselo Bigilale.
Gairowagga said architecture, like engineering, was an important profession which contributed to national development.
He said the board was established by the Architects Registration Act enacted by Parliament in 1989, and came under the Minister for Works and Implementation.
Gairowagga said the main role of the board was to protect consumers by ensuring that architects provided services to the public in a professional manner.
He said there were about 90 registered architects and 23 registered architectural companies in the country.
