Taking up a challenge to play an instrument that is played mostly by boys is a thing that Barbara Arivusu did not want to miss out on.
Arivusu 26 and of mixed parentage from Central and Gulf, is the first female in the Salvation Army of Papua New Guinea to play the cornet, an instrument almost looks like a trumpet.
“I started in 2006 when I was doing my Grade 9 and I was 15 years old back then,” Arivusu recalled.
She said she grew up in the church where she watched the elders in the church play the cornet so she was influenced to play the instrument.
Arivusu is now a member of the Salvo Koki Brass Band.
which plays in church and church-organised activities.
“I find it interesting and it’s fun but as I was playing it and got promoted to higher levels, the music started getting harder,” Arivusu said.
