FIVE armed suspects walked into a major hotel in Lae and held up staff on duty and took off with a substantial amount of cash on Monday.
Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr described the robbery as a “well-planned inside job” because the suspects knew exactly where to go and what to do when they walked into the hotel.
He said the suspects walked into the accounts section of Lae International Hotel at around 10am and took away all the money.
“The robbery happened so fast because the suspects knew exactly where to go and what to do.”
He said the suspects then walked out of the building with the cash and made a getaway on a waiting 10-seater vehicle before police were alerted.
“They then drove towards Voco Point and abandoned the car and escaped on a waiting speed boat.”
Wagambie told The National that police believed the suspects had been tipped off by someone from inside.
He said someone who knew the interior of the building and the operation of the hotel.
“Police are studying the CCTV footage and are conducting an investigation to uncover leads that might connect to the robbery suspects,” he said.
