CONCERNED authorities in Mt Hagen  have been urged to stop street vending for now to prevent rubbish piling up and criminal activities.
Businessman and community leader of Mt Hagen Willie Noki, from the Jika Malakamb clan, raised the concern because there was no authority taking care of the city’s beautification programme.
He said this after the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church members  did a major cleanathon in the city last Sunday by removing huge piles of rubbish.
Noki said street vending in the city should be stopped as no one would clean the rubbish again after the SDA Church took the initiative to voluntarily help.
He said street vendors should be allocated to areas to sell their goods and cooked food but not within the city.
Noki said there were formal markets in Kaiwe, Kalakai and Las Warakum where street vendors could be accommodated.
Noki claimed that most rubbish was created by street vendors.
