A woman was at the Gerehu police station yesterday when her house burnt down in the suburb, station commander Inspector Peter Kurai said.
A babysitter and a baby are understood to have died in the fire.
Kurai said that the woman was told that her house was on fire and she ran out of the station and did not come.
“We later saw a fire truck rushing past the station heading towards Gerehu Stage Three,” he said.
Kurai said the house went up in flames at Gerehu Stage Five.
Firemen arrived but was too late to save them. According to witnesses, they could not do anything as the fence and gate around the house were locked. They broke down the gate but could not do much.
Neighbours managed to pull out a child from the burning house.
