Barge to ease district’s transport problems

PEOPLE of South Bougainville have been given a barge to help in the transportation of goods and people.
MP Timothy Masiu said the Government bought the barge which was handed over by Treasury Minister Patrick Pruaitch during his recent visit to Buin in February.
“The barge will greatly assist the coastal people of South Bougainville, who have faced problems in transporting cocoa and copra to the markets,” he said.
Masiu said the barge would also serve the business community in Buin.
“The barge will be operated by a Buin-based management company,” Masiu said.
Masiu said so many changes had taken place in the past five months although leaders often faced undue pressure from the people who demanded services quickly.
“I do not want people to use the election to pressure me to do things,” he said.
The MP said the people needed to understand the process of accessing Government funds and services, which took time, but was vital to ensuring transparency.
Masiu also visited communities to meet and discuss issues with the people.
He started the exercise a month ago at the border communities of Rantan, Orava and Sari.
