Barras face 4-day test

PAPUA New Guinea will play Namibia in three highly anticipated clashes at Amini Park in Port Moresby this month.
The games will consist of a four-day match from Oct 16-19 two One Day Internationals on Oct 21 and 23.
Cricket PNG high performance manager Rarua Dikana told The National that the four day match against Namibia will present a whole new challenge for the Hebou-sponsored PNG Barramundis who play mostly one day and T20 matches.
“If they are playing a four-day match their approach will have to be much different to a shorter format,” Dikana said.
“We can do well over the longer games but the key is our batting. Our guys have to apply themselves, be patient, pick their shots and build an innings.
“You have to pace yourself and to have that stamina to last from session to session.
“Our guys are good at chasing quick runs because it comes naturally. That’s our style, but over the longer stretch is the real test for us.”
It will be important for the Barramundis to maintain their concentration for the entire four days.
Any lapse could prove the difference between victory and defeat.
The four-day match will be a true test cricketing for PNG in terms of their physical and mental endurance along with the tactical battle on field between the captains.
“Bowlers must deliver consistence lines and lengths in every over. If we’re bowling first then we would expect to do so for the whole day. Intercontinental Cup matches require 96 overs to be bowled per day.
“It’s up to the captain to be smart about the use of his bowlers, making sure he’s not burning them out in the first session of the day.”Dikana said.
