EMPLOYEES of the Barrick (Niugini) Limited (BNL) last week celebrated Mine Safety Week at the Porgera mine in Enga by taking part in various activities focus on “fatal risks and critical controls”.
The week-long mine safety week programme started last Monday with a walk. BNL’s acting executive managing director Benjamin Burger urged mine employees to be safety leaders in the workplace.
He said critical risks and controls underpinned safe work practices at the mine and these controls were developed to safeguard employees when carrying out their tasks.
“The main safety focus for PJV (Porgera Joint Venture) in the last two years has been on developing courageous leaders in the workplace,” he said.
“All it takes is one example, somebody having to stand up first, to have the courage to talk to the team.”
BNL’s occupational health and safety manager Robin Sheahan urged employees to look at controls in place, understand and follow them every time tasks are carried out.
